DOLLAR BULLS

The dollar is trading near its lowest in more than a year against the euro and sterling, while investors wonder whether the greenback is on the cusp of a sustained downturn or whether the recent decline will soon become a buying opportunity.

George Saravelos, global head of forex research at Deutsche Bank, focuses on rates and the carry trade.

"On the Fed, our house forecasts embed a mid-cycle view of the U.S. economy and far shallower easing cycle than priced, in line with U.S. data that continues to outperform the rest of the world, which is either close to stagnation (Europe) or deflation (China)," he says.

Markets price in 103 basis points of Fed rate cuts FEDWATCH by year-end.

"As long as the dollar's relative high-yielding position is not undermined by the Fed, positive risk appetite should ultimately be supportive of carry and the dollar as has been the case throughout the last twelve months," he adds.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks, due on Friday, will be key to the short-term outlook of the greenback.

However, "markets are already pricing in a substantial amount of Fed easing, raising the bar for a dovish surprise at Jackson Hole," forex strategists at UBS say.

"Furthermore, we see scarce evidence of a sufficient improvement in the rest of the world economic outlook to prompt a significant shift away from the dollar and U.S. assets."
