Adds background and details about extension from paragraph 2

Aug 28 (Reuters) -Dominion Energy D.N said on Wednesday that the U.S. NuclearRegulatory Commission (NRC) approved its application to extend the NorthAnna nuclear power station's operating licenses for an additional 20 years.

President Joe Biden passed the largest climate change legislation in U.S. history in 2022, meant to touch off a boom in American clean energy development including nuclear.

The company's Surry nuclear power station had received NRC approval in 2021 to extend its operating license till 2053.

Richmond, Virginia-based Dominion said that the Anna power station operates two nuclear reactors in Louisa County of the state.

The company said its North Anna's operating license was previously set to expire in 2038 and 2040 for its reactors one and two, respectively, which will now be extended till 2058 and 2060.

Surry and North Anna generate 40% of Virginia's electricity and account for about 90% of the carbon-free power in Virginia, the company said.
