Oct 16 (Reuters) -Chicago-founded law firm Jenner & Block on Wednesday said it has hired two bankruptcy partners from hometown rival Mayer Brown, including the co-leader of Mayer Brown's New York restructuring practice Doug Spelfogel.

Spelfogel and Derek Wright have joined Jenner as partners in New York and Chicago, respectively, the firm said. Spelfogel will co-chair Jenner's bankruptcy and restructuring practice after serving as a co-leader of Mayer Brown's practice in New York for the past three years.

Spelfogel said his practice has evolved over the years from being a mixture of bankruptcy-focuseddeal work and litigation to almost solely bankruptcy litigation.

A Mayer Brown spokesperson said in a statement that the firm wished Spelfogel and Wright well.

Spelfogel has been involved in several high-profile bankruptcies, including JCPenney and American Airlines, Jenner said. For two years, he represented Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee charged with sifting through the fallout of Bernie Madoff's $65 billion Ponzi scheme.

He also previously represented Pacific Alliance Asia Opportunity Fund (PAX), a Cayman Islands-based investment fund that was the largest creditor of convicted Chinese businessman and media entrepreneur Guo Wengui. Guo was convicted in July on charges of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from online followers.

Spelfogel and Wright were part of a trio that joined Mayer Brown from Foley & Lardner in 2021. Spelfogel was also the New York leader of Foley's restructuring group.
