TREASURIES NOTIONAL TRADING VOLUME HIT RECORD IN AUGUST

The average daily notional trading volume in the U.S. Treasury market went over $1 trillion for the first time in August, according to Coalition Greenwich.

"A surprise rate hike from the Bank of Japan coupled with continued fiscal policy uncertainty in the Unites States catalyzed an unusually active August," Coalition Greenwich said in a note on Monday.

At over $1 trillion, the August average daily notional volume was 37% higher than in August 2023, it said.

Treasury market volatility surged in early August, with the ICE BofA MOVE Index .MOVE, which tracks fixed income market volatility, rising to its highest since January.

Yields fell sharply, reflecting weakening economic data and a repricing of U.S. interest rate cut expectations. The moves were also the result of an unwind of popular carry trades, in which traders borrow the yen at low rates to invest in assets that offer higher returns, after the Bank of Japan unexpectedly raised interest rates.

The Benchmark 10-year yield US10YT=RR declined by over 30 basis points to 3.78% on Aug. 4 from 4.1% at the end of July. It stood at about 3.6% on Monday.
