US Plains HRW Wheat-Basis steady; dry weather worries growers

CHICAGO, Oct 4 (Reuters) -Spot basis bids for hard red winter (HRW) wheat were unchanged at southern U.S. Plains locations on Friday as K.C. HRW wheat futures KWZ24 retreated from three-month highs set a day earlier, curbing farmer grain sales.

* Growers in the Plains were busy harvesting fall crops including corn, soybeans and grain sorghum amid unusually warm and dry conditions.

* Drought remained a concern as farmers debated whether to plant winter wheat into dusty soils or wait for rain. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center's outlooks predicted below-normal precipitation over the next two weeks.

* The latest weekly U.S. Drought Monitor showed that 50% of top winter wheat producer Kansas was in "moderate" drought while "severe" drought covered 37% of Oklahoma.

* As dryness hampered the seeding and germination of the 2025 winter wheat crop, uncertainty about production prospects discouraged farmers from booking forward sales, one broker said this week.

* Protein premiums for HRW wheat shipped by rail to or through Kansas City fell by 5 cents a bushel for wheat with 11.4% and 11.6% protein but rose 2 cents for wheat with 12.8% through 13.6% protein. Premiums for other grades were unchanged. KCBT/SCA

* K.C. December hard red winter wheat KWZ24 settled down 13-1/2 cents on Friday at $5.98 a bushel. Still, for the week, the contract rose 21-1/4 cents a bushel or 3.7%. WHE/C
