US recap: Euro slides against firming dollar

Sept 30 (Reuters) -The dollar index rose Monday as Treasury yields firmed ahead of and after comments by Fed Chair Jerome Powell on the state of the U.S. economy.

In his speech, Powell said the U.S. economy seems poised for a continued slowdown in inflation, that the U.S. job market remains solid, that the risks are two-sided and that the central bank does not feel like it is in a hurry to cut quickly.

Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said he would be open to another large cut in November if data shows job growth slowing faster than expected.

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said he sees cautionary indicators on thejobs market and there will be a lot more rate cuts.

Israel has told the United States it is conducting limited ground operations focused on Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon near the border with Israel, the State Department said on Monday.

U.S. East and Gulf Coast port workers are set to go on strike Tuesday.

The euro fell following downside surprises to September Italian and German prices and as European auto stocks tumbled.

ECB President Christine Lagarde said the latest developments point to inflation returning to target while some indicators suggest economic headwinds.

The pound was little changed after solid UK housing data though Q2 growth was revised marginally lower.

The yen fell ahead of Tuesday’s BOJ Tankan report and policy minutes as quarter-end flows and higher Treasury yields weighed.

Volatilities for FX options expiring within a month rose to reflect risks associated with Fed speakers and U.S. data including Friday payrolls.

Treasury yields rose 2-6 basis points as thecurve flattened, the 2s-10s curve was down about 5 basis point to +14.9bp.

The S&P 500 fell 0.21% amid firmer yields.

WTI was flat, losing earlier gains that had come on Middle East tensions.

Gold dropped 1.06% though remains on pace for its best quarter since 2020.

Copper fell 1.08%, retreating from earlier gains that taken it to a four-month high.

Heading toward the close: EUR/USD -0.33%, USD/JPY +1.09%, GBP/USD -0.03%, AUD/USD +0.17%, DXY +0.44%.
