$5.8 BILLION BITCOIN OPTIONS EXPIRY AHEAD

Nearly $5.8 billion in cryptocurrency options are set to expire today, according to data from cryptocurrency derivatives platform Deribit.

Of the bitcoin options expiring on Friday, about 20% is in the money, according to Deribit CEO Luuk Strijers, who says heightened crypto market volatility is likely as traders close or roll over their positions.

Call options on Deribit are currently relatively more expensive than put options, Strijers says, a typically bullish indicator.

Bitcoin BTC= is on track to rise nearly 4% over the week, and surge over 11% in September, with the Federal Reserve's 50 basis point rate cut injecting some optimism back for investors in the digital currency.

That's a change from the historical norm, as September has been one of the worst months for bitcoin. Between 2010 to 2023, according to CCData, bitcoin notched an average drop of 4.51%, making it its worst-performing month on record.

Ether prices ETH= are on track for weekly gains of about 3%, and nearly 6% for the month.

Meanwhile, crypto derivatives markets are seeing some moves that indicate more positive sentiment towards crypto, according to a report from Block Scholes.

"Bitcoin open interest for calls has slowly been on the rise, and the volatility smile has grown steadily toward calls for both BTC and ETH," Block Scholes says.

"While implied volatility levels for ATM short-dated options have oscillated downward, we see a growing positive outlook overall in the derivatives market for the short term."
